Becoming a Notary

Self-Training & Education
Every citizen appointed as a notary has a duty to learn the notarial laws on their own initiative. Before a notary performs any notarial act, the notary is required to read the Notary Public Act, 2003 PA 238 (MCL 55.261, et seq.) (PDF).

Application Process

Complete an Application for Michigan Notary Public Commission (PDF) that is available online from the Michigan Department of State. You may also stop by the County Clerk's Office to pick up a copy.

Surety Bonds & Fees
  • Obtain and file a $10,000 surety bond with the County Clerk.
  • Pay the application fee of $10 to the County Clerk.
Oath of Office
The County Clerk will administer an oath of office and a declaration for applicant signature to verify that you have complied with all requirements.

Mail Completed Application
Forward the completed application and $10 check (payable to State of Michigan) to:

Application Approval

If approved, you will receive your notary commission certificate by mail to your residence address.
